Successful treatment of thin endometrium with Hysteroscopic PRP injection followed by ICSI
Sharada (34) and her husband Pankaj (38) married for 8 years had tried fertility treatments at many places but all the treatments failed miserably. With no hope, they visited Oasis Fertility, Pune. Several tests and scans were carried out to find out the exact reason for infertility. Sharada was diagnosed with a thin endometrium during the evaluation.
What is thin endometrium?
The endometrium is the innermost lining of the uterus and this layer is very important for the successful implantation of the embryo. Endometrium provides nourishment to the growing fetus. If the lining thickness of the endometrium is less than 7mm, it may result in miscarriages. The possible causes for thin endometrium are low levels of estrogen, pelvic inflammatory disease, fibroids, D&C, inadequate blood flow to the uterus, etc.
How is thin endometrium treated?
PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) is used in the regeneration of the endometrium. Blood plasma is prepared from the patient’s own blood. This contains several growth factors like epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), cytokines that can induce growth. PRP has been found to improve the thickness of the endometrium and help women in a successful pregnancy. Healing occurs and also new cells begin to grow due to PRP injection.
Who can benefit from PRP?
Women with
- Thin endometrium
- Men with Non-Obstructive Azoospermia
- Poor ovarian reserve
- Advanced maternal age
- Primary ovarian insufficiency
Sharada had one probe Dilation and Curettage (D&C) and also 2 unsuccessful IVF attempts. To enable Sharada to conceive, hysteroscopic injection of PRP was done during the estrogen-primed FET cycle. After this process, the thickness of the endometrium increased to 8.2 mm following which embryos were frozen. Through ICSI, Sharada got a positive pregnancy.
