6 Foods to Eat Before Getting Pregnant

Food has been linked to fertility. In fact there is a direct connection between the kind of food consumed and the fertility problems that a couple has faced. So, if you & your partner are planning to have a baby and trying for the same, it is time you watched what you eat. These foods will help improve your fertility and also get you in the habit of eating a healthy diet which is imperative during and after pregnancy.

1. Fresh, Organic Fruits & Vegetables

You need to pack as much vitamins and minerals in your body while you are trying to get pregnant. So, it is a good idea to fill your meals with fruits and veggies, since this is very imperative for your diet during pregnancy as well.

Fruits and vegetables provide the body with sufficient antioxidants which will improve the fertility. Also, a healthy diet helps get your body into the appropriate weight range which is also linked to fertility.

Also, ensure that the fruits and veggies you consume are organic. Exposure to pesticides could also affect fertility. In case it is tough to source organic produce, you can take necessary measures by washing them thoroughly before consumption. In certain cases like grapes, ensure that you soak them at least for 15 minutes in a bowl of salt water before eating.

While a low carb diet is recommended while planning your pregnancy, it is strictly not suggested that you go off carbs. So, in place if trans fats and simple sugars, you need to include slow-digesting carbohydrates such a whole grains, beans and fiber-rich foods. These improve fertility by controlling the blood sugar and insulin levels.

3. Dairy Proteins

Studies show that whole fat milk and dairy improves fertility. This is because low-fat or skimmed milk has altered amounts of hormonal content. The calcium and the proteins in whole fat dairy prepares your body better for pregnancy.

So, try to include milk, lassi (buttermilk), and fresh homemade paneer (cottage cheese) in your diet

4. High Protein Foods

According to a study, a high protein, low carb diet greatly improves fertility. According to the study, patients whose protein intake represented 25 percent or more of their daily diet, and whose carbohydrate intake was 40 percent or less, had pregnancy rates four times higher than those who ate less protein and more carbs while undergoing in vitro fertilization. Proteins are very important for good quality of eggs and embryos.

So, your food should include high protein foods such as fish and poultry. If you are a vegetarian, start eating legume and lentils is large quantities.

5.  Omega Fatty Acids

Omega fatty acids help regulate hormones and increase the blood flow to the uterus. They also help regulate the menstrual cycles. With such great benefits, they are obviously great for fertility. The only trouble with omega fatty acids are that they are usually not constituent in the Indian diet.

So, go out of your way and ensure you include flaxseeds, walnuts and sunflower seeds in your diet. You could probably make a smoothie everyday with either one of these ingredients and include into your system.
