Do’s & Don’ts of IVF Treatment

Do’s & Don’ts of IVF Treatment

Infertility has become more common these days due to lifestyle changes, environmental factors, stress, PCOS, delayed parenthood, smoking, lack of sleep and several other factors. Other reasons like medical history and genetic conditions can also contribute to infertility. IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is one of the assisted reproductive technologies that can help a couple overcome infertility and achieve parenthood.

What is the process of IVF?

In IVF treatment, the eggs from a woman are retrieved after treatment and fertilized with the sperms of the partner resulting in the formation of embryos. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus for implantation and further growth.

When IVF?

IVF is usually advised in cases of blocked fallopian tubes, severe male factor, unexplained infertility or when initial treatments like ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination fail. The decision for IVF pregnancy depends on several factors like the medical condition, age, duration of infertility etc.

List of Dos:

  • Choose the right fertility clinic:

There are too many fertility centres but it is essential to select the best centre that is equipped with highly advanced labs, equipment and has highly qualified and skilled fertility specialists. As IVF is a long process, you need to have a very good rapport with your doctor and other staff who can guide you through the procedure. A centre that puts patients first and focuses on providing ethical, transparent and evidence-based treatment should be your choice.

  • Know the entire process of IVF?

Before you begin your IVF treatment, it is important to clearly understand each and every step of the process. IVF is an emotionally, physically and financially taxing journey, therefore proper planning and lifestyle changes help you to go through the entire process with ease. Allay all your doubts and anxieties with proper discussion with your treating clinician so that you can embark upon this journey with the right confidence and optimism.

  • Understand the financial aspect:

Before you take up IVF, discuss it in detail with the counsellor/doctor regarding the finances. Knowledge regarding different payment options, EMIs and insurance will help you prepare in advance and allay your stress.

  • Keep yourself calm:

During the IVF process, you will be given hormonal injections to stimulate egg production. Hormones can cause a lot of emotional changes including anxiety, sadness, irritation and disappointment. Practising meditation and being well aware of the procedure will help you calm down.

  • Stick to what your doctor says:

Whether it is IVF treatment food diet, lifestyle, weight management, or medications strictly follow your fertility specialist’s advice. In case of any doubts, always consult your doctor before making any changes.

  • Don’t shy away from asking for support:

IVF journey is a roller coaster ride. Never feel bad about taking psychological support from family, friends, or a psychologist. Certain IVF support groups can help you make this journey smooth.

  • Find means to reduce stress:

You might feel excited, disappointed, and too stressed. Find a hobby, a routine that can help you stay motivated and hopeful. It is always important to have realistic expectations. Patience is the key to success.  Remember to have a never give up attitude.

List of Don’ts:

  • Smoking:

Smoking will reduce the chance of conception. It affects sperm quality, count and motility. In the case of women, it adversely affects egg quality and increases the risk of miscarriage.

  • Alcohol:

Alcohol consumption can negatively impact the chance of conception.

  • Intense workout Regime:

An intense exercise regime can affect your IVF treatment. It is essential to lose weight so as to improve the chance of success. But don’t get too hard on yourself. Moderate exercise during IVF is only recommended.

The road to parenthood for some couples may take a little more time and maybe a little hard, it is important to stay determined and confident.

Remember all good things take time.
