Things to know about Secondary Infertility

A couple’s inability to have a second child is usually termed as the Secondary Infertility, which is very common these days. It often happens with women who are in their 30s or mid-30s and trying to conceive after a long time, say six months or a year.

Of course, there has been a lot of discussion and research on the increase in Secondary Infertility.

Here are a few stated causes regarding medical disorders

  • Any damage to fallopian tube because of ectopic pregnancies
  • Ovulation issue, uterine conditions in women and endometriosis
  • Early pregnancies or a C-section Delivery during the first time.
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) usually occurs because of an STD due to unprotected sex or other reasons.
  • Blockage of the uterus by fibroids
  • Obstruction in seminal vesicles.

The other external factors could be:

Aging factor

After the first pregnancy, most of the women age, and aging is a significant factor for getting pregnant.  Women are most fertile in their 20s and mid-30s

In the late 30s, the egg starts to deplete. The quality and quantity also reduce a bit. The growth of the egg is inversely related to the age.  With maturity, the quality of eggs diminishes. These eggs might not have the capacity to sustain and get fertilized.

On another note, if a woman is thinking of getting pregnant in her late 30s, it would be better to consult a doctor.

The weakening of the Uterus

If you have had to undergo a cesarean during the birth of your first child, if there were uterine adhesions or pelvic scarring, it would be hard to achieve a successful pregnancy. The scarred tissues may interfere with the fertilization process, in a significant way.

You may be prone to endometriosis or blockage in the fallopian tube that can obstruct the implantation of the egg.

A blockage or injury in the fallopian tube can prompt ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is a condition when the egg attaches itself to the inner lining of the fallopian tube, and the fertilization happens in the fallopian tube, which for the most part results in loss of pregnancy.

Women can develop PCOS due to different factors at any age. This condition will influence your ovulation causing challenges in the second pregnancy. In case, if you have been attempting to conceive more than six months and not being able to pregnant,  visit your gynecologist.

Partner’s age

The other most prominent reason for secondary infertility is the partner’s age and obesity. If the partner is overweight, then it might affect his sperm count to a considerable level.
