Sexual Dysfunction in Women

Not all couples enjoy a satisfactory sexual life. It could be that either partner or both experience difficulty during any stage of a normal sexual activity – like desire, arousal or orgasm. This difficulty is referred as sexual dysfunction or sexual malfunction. Research reveals that around 45% of women and 31% in men experience this. And sexual dysfunction is a key reason causing infertility in both women and men.

Different physical and psychological conditions cause sexual dysfunction in women.

Physical conditions

Dyspareunia: A condition where women experience pain during sexual intercourse.
Vaginismus: A condition in which the muscles around the vagina cause spasm leading to closure of the vagina.
Other reasons include past medical and surgical history, hormonal levels, lifestyle, etc.

Psychological conditions

These include depression, stress, and disturbed state of mind.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

STDs are yet another cause for sexual dysfunction and can even cause infertility. Typically, STD-related infertility is caused by Gonorrhea and Chlamydia. These diseases when worsened can lead to ectopic pregnancy, decreased fertility or even absolute infertility!

Intra Uterine Devices

Certain intra uterine devices also carry high risk of infections and can cause infertility.

Other Conditions

Multiple sex partners, history of pelvic inflammatory disease, history of orchitis and epididymitis in men, mumps in men, eating disorders in women, endometriosis, defects in uterus and chronic urinary tract infections.
